Update

Behind the scenes there’s a lot going on with the site. I got it in my head to add the ability to allow you dear readers to comment and I’m working on that.

I also have (what I think is) a pretty cool side project that I have been working on with my home network. My network arose from the decline of the dvd player and that The Office left Netflix, and for a while Harry Potter left HBO. So what do you do with stuff you want to watch but can’t stream where you have the dvds but don’t have dvd players anymore and you tend to lean a bit nerdy? Home network is the answer. I have a small server running on a old laptop in my basement serving the contents of the dvds to the tvs in my house using an open-source software called Jellyfin. It works, and it was easier than getting comments to work on this website!

The cool project I’m working on with the network now is installing and using another open-source software called Pihole. Simply put, Pihole acts as a filter on your home internet and stops annoyances like ads and trackers. You know when you fire up YouTube and you get two ads before the video, ads in the middle and bonus ads every time you pause? Pihole filters all that stuff out. Simply put with complexity, it is an alternate DNS server hosted locally with filtering. With luck this will be up and running this weekend. With more luck comments will be available soon too.
