Time passes and stuff happens but first we talk about books. I am on a run of average books. I did have two that I rated 8, and I’m working on another that may also get a favorable rank.
The Hike by Drew Magary. I tend to favor books that I find original. This book was a little different than anything I read recently. No spoilers, but this book had a jolt that in hindsight I should have seen but entirely missed. It was a solid ‘pretty good but eh’ and then it turned, and I had to read the turn again, and then my feelings about the whole book changed, and the entire story changed and it became an 8. That sounds like a 9 right? Measured entirely on its own it would be an 8+ or 9, but The Hike has to compete in my mind with similarly toned books and there are some that hit harder.
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. In hindsight I made a mistake with this book by listening to it instead of reading it - I think it would have been even better if I read it slower than I listened to it. Well thought out story with good writing and likable characters, although I can’t remember any of their names. This one spanned multiple connected timelines that all came together very well and I was bummed when it was over. There was almost nothing happy in this entire book.
Back-ish on track. Stay tuned…
